Magical realism is a great way to enjoy stories. Magical realism adds an extra dimension to a story. It adds the spark that makes a story stand out from others. It can help you understand the world better. As you work your brain, you can slowly decipher what the author is saying.
Let me begin by introducing you to the amazing work of Frida Kahlo’s “The Wounded Deer”. This strange painting is actually a powerful reminder of the message that lies within it. Frida had a difficult life. She was nearly killed in a bus crash, suffered through difficult times growing up, and was in an unstable marriage. The message in the painting tells the whole story of her life. Frida Kallo is this deer, despite being beaten by many arrows and still seemingly alive. Frida Kahlo’s magical perception of a human face is a testament to her strength and determination despite numerous challenges. Although it looks odd and farfetched at first glance, Metamorphosis is by Franz Kafka shows how despite all the difficulties she has faced, her spirit is strong and unflinching. Franz’s father was not the most supportive of Franz as a child. Franz experienced mental abuse as a young child because of his isolation and neglect. The Metamorphosis expand on this trauma in a bizarre and complex way. The Metamorphosis follows Gregor, a man who wakes and discovers that he is now a vermin. This attempts to make sense of his relationships with his family. He is disgusted by everyone. Kafka writes lines 244-247 that “The lad only thinks about business.” It almost makes it cross that he doesn’t go out in the evenings. He’s been here for a week, but stayed home each evening.” Kafka suggests that this transformation, which Kafka uses to describe Gregor’s outcast behavior, puts him in this quarantined state. This is similar in most ways to Kafka’s treatment as an adolescent. Which again connects back to magical realism. These works of artwork found creative ways to incorporate magical reality. Creators were able communicate their emotions without compromising the viewers’ ability to guess. These texts are truly extraordinary, and combined with a sense of reality, provide an entertaining way to enjoy them. Their complicated themes allow for many interpretations beyond just stating them. And there is no way to truly know the true meaning.
