Baldwin went to another restaurant until Edward (Margolies) arrived. He describes his anger at whites, just like he depicts the waiter. He states that he hated her because of her pale face and her alarming, dumbfounded eyes. I thought she would find a black male so terrifying if they were to meet. He was almost regretful when the server said that Negroes weren’t allowed in this cafe. Baldwin was ‘colder’ and’more dangerous than ever’ when this information was revealed. He was forced to put his hands around her neck to gag her. Baldwin, realizing she was incapable of doing enough, raises a water glass towards his head. Baldwin wakes up from his stupor when the cup breaks and dashes to make it out. His repressed anger was released. Baldwin has presented a convincing demonstration. He knew that he had to let go of the bitterness that had engulfed his family (Baldwin and James). Baldwin was caught between the scorn he felt for him father and the bitterness of feeling the guilt for not understanding the reason behind his father’s actions. Baldwin emphasizes that he knew why he had delayed this visit so much the moment he saw him. My mother told me that I didn’t want to see him because I hated him. This was false, however. It was because I detested him, and I needed the disdain to grip. Baldwin was reluctant to admit his disdain, but he knew that the feeling of despised had been there for as long as he could recall.
